By Erin Cary, MinneTESOL 2nd Vice President & 2017 MELEd Conference Co-Chair
The 4th Annual Minnesota English Learner Education (MELEd) Conference will be held October 26-8, 2017, at the The Doubletree by Hilton in Bloomington, MN. Please print this handy copy of the Save the Date to share with colleagues.
The Minnesota English Learner Education Conference is a partnership between MinneTESOL and the Minnesota Department of Education. It is a merger of the annual MinneTESOL Fall Conference and the Minnesota ESL, Bilingual, and Migrant Education Conference
This year’s presenters have been notified and our conference schedule is being finalized! We’ll be sending the schedule to presenters in the next few days. In order to encourage new presenters in ELL, those presenting for the first time at MELEd are invited to have their conference fee reimbursed! More details to come (or feel free to contact the conference co-chairs, Erin Cary and Darren LaScotte to receive the reimbursement).
We are proud to announce this year’s keynote speakers!
Tatyana Kleyn, associate professor and director of the Bilingual Education and TESOL programs at the City College of New York, will deliver a keynote about her work with translanguaging on Friday, October 27.
Jaylani Hussein, Executive Director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN), will deliver our Saturday keynote about his refugee experience moving from Somalia to Minnesota with his family in 1993, his work supporting Muslim American legal and civil rights across the country and how educators can get involved! We are greatly anticipating these exciting keynotes!
Conference-goers: registration opens September 7—check our website to register for the conference!
A significant number of travel scholarships up to $250 will also be available to cover transportation and accommodations for MinneTESOL member registrants travelling 50 miles or more to attend MELEd 2017—watch our website and Facebook page (plus your email, MinneTESOL members) for more details and our application very soon!
We are also seeking volunteers to help out at our event! Please check out the roles for volunteers at our conference (many of which qualify for conference fee reimbursement!) and click on the Volunteer Interest Survey within to sign up! We’re especially in need of Tech Support/Room Ambassadors (no tech knowledge necessary!).
We look forward to supporting presenters, conference-goers and everyone involved in MELEd 2017!
