SUMMARY:CCRS Support Webinar: They've Got This – Fostering Independent Learners
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: THU 1/14/21 \nWe all know that whoever is doing the talking is doing the learning. The idea of creating space for learners to be active contributors in the classroom is widely accepted as best practice. However\, practically and powerfully putting this into action can be challenging. How do we facilitate students finding their own way out of learning roadblocks besides just telling them? How do we bring out skills that students already possess and help them apply those skills in an academic context? How do we cultivate a learning culture that is less dependent on the teacher disseminating knowledge and more dependent on learner contributions? In order to develop mastery of CCR standards\, it is crucial for learners to develop practical skills and strategies for becoming independent learners. In this session\, hear from several teachers about how they are integrating ACES/TIF skills and CCRS – for both in-person and remote learning environments – to establish a culture of empowered learning in their classrooms. \nIf you require ASL Interpretation\, please contact Gail Rutan at grutan01@hamline.edu \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cultural Perspectives for Diverse Adult Learners
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: THU. 1/21/21 \nAnaïs Nin\, author of Little Birds\, was quoted as saying\, “We don’t see people as they are.” Cultural differences can promote diversity in thought and enrichment in a learning environment. Learning will be acquired through breakout groups\, short videos\, discussion and facilitation of the topic. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nGain awareness of one’s cultural perspectives\, social location and the need for cultural humility in Adult Basic Education.\nBegin recognizing and grappling with issues related to culture\, identity\, bias\, privilege and power that can enhance and/or impede learners.\nDefine implicit bias and identify strategies for overcoming negative and harmful biases.\nExpect and accept non-closure as a commitment of life-long learning.

SUMMARY:What Is Ableism Anyway? And What Can We Do About It?
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: TUES. 2/16/21 \nDisability is often absent from talks about social justice. Yet\, people with disabilities have arguably some of the worst U.S. health\, education\, housing\, employment\, and community safety outcomes. Why? One answer is ableism. Ableism shapes both how people with disabilities experience society and how society designs its systems of exclusion. In this session\, we’ll first look at the word “normal.” Second\, we’ll get a snapshot of disability history and how it intersects with race\, language\, gender\, and immigration. Third\, let’s learn the four disability frames that can cause harm or improve access to civil rights for people with disabilities and share how those frames are still at work in society today. Lastly\, let’s hear about some useful steps to become better allies against ableism.
