SUMMARY:Algebra?! Not ALGEBRA! Let’s Make Sense of Math-y Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: THU. 12/1/22 \nDid you know that algebraic reasoning starts in CCRS Level A?! Come experience a routine (Always\, Sometimes\, Never) that creates space for students to reason mathematically and justify their thinking\, while “doing algebra”! In this webinar\, you will get to participate in rich math conversations and exercise your algebraic reasoning skills. You will walk away with ideas for incorporating algebraic reasoning into your lessons/units with students at various CCRS levels. (Not very comfortable with algebra? No problem!)

SUMMARY:Administrator Webinar: Everyday Adulting Includes Math! Let’s Make Room for It
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: TUE. 11/15/22 \n“Both literacy and numeracy are critical skills for adults in order to fully engage in their communities.”  This statement is part of the official stance of MN Adult Education.  Yet reading and writing often receive faaaaar more attention in the classroom by teachers and students alike! Most adult educators are more comfortable with literacy instruction than with numeracy.  As administrators and program leaders\, it is up to YOU to shift this culture and make math a priority\, and also to give teachers support in what may be a scary new endeavor! \nJoin us as we articulate the difference between numeracy and math\, locate key instructional and professional development resources\, and discuss the challenges and possible solutions to give math its rightful place in your programs.

SUMMARY:Math Institute 2022 Virtual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: FRI. 9/23/22 \n\nPromotional Flyer – Feel free to download the flyer and forward to your colleagues!\n\nIf you require ASL Interpretation\, please contact Gail Rutan @ grutan01@hamline.edu. \nDan Meyer\, Chief Academic Officer at Desmos\, has taught high school math to students who didn’t like high school math. He has advocated for better math instruction on CNN\, Good Morning America\, Everyday With Rachel Ray\, and TED.com. Dan earned a doctorate from Stanford University in math education and is currently the Chief Academic Officer at Desmos\, where he explores the future of math\, technology\, and learning. He has worked with teachers internationally and in all fifty United States\, and was named one of Tech & Learning’s 30 Leaders of the Future. \nSchedule:\n8:55 am: Join meeting and test your sound (Use the link you received in your registration confirmation email) \n9:00 am – 12:00 pm: DAN MEYER\n\nKeynote: Math Is Power Not Punishment (Dan Meyer)\nWe often offer students shortcuts\, strategies\, and skills before students understand their origin\, their value\, and the millions of hours of work they’ve saved mathematicians throughout history. We’ll look at techniques for putting students in a position to need these challenging skills so they feel like power\, not punishment. \nMath Without Mistakes (Dan Meyer)\nMath teachers have worked to destigmatize mistakes\, but we continue to diagnose as mistaken what is instead very purposeful student thinking. We’ll learn about curriculum\, technology\, and strategies that celebrate and develop that thinking instead. \n12:00-12:45 pm: LUNCH \nCONCURRENT SESSIONS (choose one):\nConcurrent Session 1 (12:45 – 3pm)\nBuilding Curiosity and Making Sense of Math (Presenters: Katy Chiqui and Marcie Vaiphei): On the surface\, math at CCRS levels A and B can seem straightforward. In actuality\, there are rich relationships and concepts that students need to explore and make sense of when building math proficiency. In this session\, you will experience depth and rigor within specific A/B standards\, and utilize guidelines and resources to plan a rich task that allows students to experience depth and rigor within the A/B standards. \nConcurrent Session 2 (12:45 – 3pm)\nExploring Variables in Word Problems\, Graphs\, and Equations (Presenters: Amber Delliger and Rebecca Strom): When will I use algebra in real life? That is a question many of us have asked ourselves\, and we certainly have heard from our students! In this session\, we will explore the relationships between math variables and representations\, and the context they represent. Experience contextualizing and decontextualizing math with level C/D standards\, and walk away with resources and strategies for facilitating similar experiences with your students. \nConcurrent Session 3 (12:45 – 1:45pm)\nMoving Math Forward in Your Program: A Session for Program Leaders (Presenters: Patsy Egan and Astrid Liden): Let’s talk! Managers\, coordinators\, and lead teachers will have a chance to network with colleagues around improving math offerings at their respective programs. In this session\, we will identify barriers to the development and delivery of math instruction and the supports needed to improve our programs’ math offerings. We will also highlight ways MN Adult Ed programs have been able to successfully incorporate math instruction for all learners. Come join the conversation! \n

SUMMARY:Antiracist Praxis Study Circle\, Summer 2022
DESCRIPTION:Application Deadline: FRI. 5/27/22 \nAPPLY NOW >> \n\nNOTE: Participation will be limited to keep the group a manageable size.\n\nStudy Circle Meetings: ONLINE via Zoom\, on Wednesdays from 3-5 pm (CDT) as follows: \n\nWednesday\, June 15\nWednesday\, June 22\nWednesday June 29\nWednesday\, July 13\nWednesday\, July 20\n\nFacilitator: Cydnee Sanders \nDescription: Many of us have heard the terms antiracist and DEI (diversity\, equity and inclusion)\, but how do we actually implement these large frameworks into our adult English classrooms? This study circle goes beyond defining antiracism and explores how the research around Translanguaging by Ofelia García and Culturally Responsive Teaching by Zaretta Hammond provide us with tools to change the way we approach teaching. \nThe study circle is not intended to be a basic “what is racism” professional development activity\, so we have some working assumptions and hope those interested in joining can agree to start with these foundational beliefs: \n\nRacism is systemic. White supremacy and systemic racism are leading problems in our education system. These systems are especially harmful to people of color and the English language learners we serve.\nIdentifying and addressing implicit bias is paramount to this work. It is a personal journey\, and we all enter this work together from different places.\nIt is not enough to be “not racist” but we have to be intentionally antiracist.\nWe are willing to work in a collaborative environment and to hold each other accountable.\n\nTime Commitment: 5 two-hour meetings\, plus an expected 1-2 hours per week of preparation by reading\, viewing\, and reflecting on assigned tasks \nCEUs: 20 for those who attend ALL 5 meetings and complete all study circle activities \nStipends: $100 for those who attend ALL 5 meetings and complete all study circle activities \nIf you require ASL Interpretation\, please contact Gail Rutan at grutan01@hamline.edu \n
