DESCRIPTION:Application Deadline: FRI. 5/27/22 \nAPPLY NOW >> \n\nNOTE: Participation will be limited to keep the group a manageable size.\n\nStudy Circle Meetings: ONLINE via Zoom\, on Wednesdays from 3-5 pm (CDT) as follows: \n\nWednesday\, June 15\nWednesday\, June 22\nWednesday June 29\nWednesday\, July 13\nWednesday\, July 20\n\nFacilitator: Cydnee Sanders \nDescription: Many of us have heard the terms antiracist and DEI (diversity\, equity and inclusion)\, but how do we actually implement these large frameworks into our adult English classrooms? This study circle goes beyond defining antiracism and explores how the research around Translanguaging by Ofelia García and Culturally Responsive Teaching by Zaretta Hammond provide us with tools to change the way we approach teaching. \nThe study circle is not intended to be a basic “what is racism” professional development activity\, so we have some working assumptions and hope those interested in joining can agree to start with these foundational beliefs: \n\nRacism is systemic. White supremacy and systemic racism are leading problems in our education system. These systems are especially harmful to people of color and the English language learners we serve.\nIdentifying and addressing implicit bias is paramount to this work. It is a personal journey\, and we all enter this work together from different places.\nIt is not enough to be “not racist” but we have to be intentionally antiracist.\nWe are willing to work in a collaborative environment and to hold each other accountable.\n\nTime Commitment: 5 two-hour meetings\, plus an expected 1-2 hours per week of preparation by reading\, viewing\, and reflecting on assigned tasks \nCEUs: 20 for those who attend ALL 5 meetings and complete all study circle activities \nStipends: $100 for those who attend ALL 5 meetings and complete all study circle activities \nIf you require ASL Interpretation\, please contact Gail Rutan at grutan01@hamline.edu \n

Presented by Lucy Rosario and Andrea Echelberger. \nSession 1 (Friday\, May 13) will focus on the neuroscience of stress and trauma and how it impacts your brain\, body\, and learning. It will also delve into teacher well-being with brain-based strategies for preventing compassion fatigue and improving attunement in order to increase instructional effectiveness with trauma-impacted learners. \nSession 2 (Friday\, May 20) will focus on programmatic structure and instructional practices to create a healing centered environment that will create an inclusive and positive learning experience and improve learner outcomes. \n \nLucille Rosario\, MSW\, LICSW\, has over 15 years of experience in leadership and direct practice in the social work field. Lucille received her Bachelors in Social Work from St. Olaf College and her Masters of Social Work from Columbia University in New York City. Lucille has previously run programs addressing youth development\, healthy relationships\, family violence\, parenting\, trauma\, mental illness\, and nutrition in Mexico\, South Bronx\, Minnesota. Lucille is currently a School Social Worker at a high school special education program in Brooklyn Park where she is part of their trauma leadership team\, Equity Committee and has participated in the year of learning with Resmaa Menakem\, along with a number of other district-wide projects focused on equity and trauma-informed teaching in schools. Lucille is also a community faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Social Work\, and volunteers her time supporting refugees and helping professionals at the United States/Mexico border.

DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: THU. 4/28/22 \nJoin us on Zoom to delve into Integrated Education and Training (IET).  Integrated Education and Training and (IET) is a service approach that provides adult education and literacy activities concurrently and contextually with workforce preparation activities and workforce training for a specific occupation or occupational cluster for the purpose of educational and career advancement. \n1:00 pm – WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (link located in your registration confirmation email)\nPatsy Egan & ATLAS Staff\, Brad Hasskamp and Julie Dincau\, MN Dept. of Education\, and Heather Turngren\, Minneapolis ABE \n1:30 -2:30 pm – CONCURRENT SESSION 1 (CHOOSE ONE):\n(a) IET 101: Back to Basics! Why do it? – Presenters: Julie Dincau and Brad Hasskamp\, MDE\nIf you’re new to IET\, you may want to know the basics. Join us as we break down the basics of Integrated Education and Training (IET). The session will provide you with information on the key components of IET\, the benefits of this from adult career pathways programming\, and where to locate resources to begin your IET journey. \n(b) My SSLO Story – Presenters: Patsy Egan and Kristine Kelly\, ATLAS and panel\nSSLOs – that pesky but oh-so-important Single Set of Learning Objectives – emerge in programs in their own way! Join us to hear about various programs’ SSLO journeys\, and how they finally landed on SSLOs worthy of the great teaching and learning happening at their sites. Panelists include ABE colleagues from Moose Lake DOC\, Sauk Rapids (Hillside Adult Education)\, and the International Institute. Facilitated by ATLAS staff members Patsy Egan and Kristine Kelly. \n2:30-3:20 pm – CONCURRENT SESSION 2 (CHOOSE ONE):\n(a) Unpacking the IET Design Toolkit – Presenter: Heather Turngren\, Minneapolis ABE and Kristine Kelly\, ATLAS\nUnlocking the Integrated Education and Training (IET) Design Toolkit\nHeard about IET but don’t know exactly where to start? Interested in offering IET and need some tools or resources to support you with this work? Come learn how to get started with designing an IET with tools and resources to make the process easier to navigate. Join us to learn more about utilizing the IET Design Toolkit to further your current IET or to begin an IET in your program. \n(b) Don’t do it alone: SE Minnesota Regional Model for IETs – Presenters: Jill Rivard\, Hiawatha Valley/Red Wing ABE and Penny Jahnke\, SE ABE\nHow many of you have thought : “I can’t do IET because my program is too small\, I don’t have the time\, I can’t afford it\, I don’t know where to start\, I can’t do the SSLO’s.” We were there too. DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: FRI. 3/11/22 (Part 1); FRI. 3/18/22 (Part 2) \nEnglish pronunciation is a challenge for teachers and learners alike! In order for learners to be able to add the features of English pronunciation to their speaking toolbox\, they need explicit instruction so that they can hear and produce the target sounds and rhythms. \nIn these two sessions\, you will learn about techniques to teach pronunciation that will be helpful for learners from a variety of language backgrounds and ESOL levels\, and multisensory activities that can be used during in-person or remote instruction that go far beyond “listen and repeat”. The training will also discuss the importance of focusing on intelligibility as opposed to accent reduction\, and provide suggestions for incorporating the techniques and activities into existing curriculum rather than stand-alone classes. Participants do not need to attend both sessions. \nIn Part 1 (a 90-minute session on March 11 from 1:30-3:00pm)\, we will dive into ways to teach and practice the sounds of English\, including minimal pairs\, articulatory settings\, final consonant production\, and consonant clusters. \nIn Part 2 (a 90-minute session on March 18 from 1:30-3:00pm)\, we will go above and beyond the sounds to explore ways to teach and practice the rhythms of English\, including word stress\, thought groups\, and intonation. \nCome prepared to try a variety of activities with your teaching colleagues\, and leave with ideas that you can implement immediately! \nIf you require ASL interpretation\, please contact Gail Rutan
