SUMMARY:Math Institute 2021 - Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: FRI. 9/24/21 \nIf you require ASL Interpretation\, please contact Gail Rutan at grutan01@hamline.edu \nWhether you are an experienced math teacher or just beginning the journey of incorporating numeracy into your core classes\, Math Institute 2021 is for you! \nThe focus of this year’s Math Institute is coherence. How do I help my students successfully engage with higher level standards? What math concepts are foundational to understanding CCRS C\, D\, and even E level math? What math can I incorporate into my ELL classes that will help my students succeed in achieving high school equivalency or college entry later on? \nElizabeth Peyser\, a national director of content and implementation at Curriculum Associates\, specializes in interpreting mathematical content progressions of the Common Core State Standards\, on which the CCRS was based. \nIn the morning\, Elizabeth will lead us through two content progressions and give us time to “play” with the math ourselves. She will address proportional thinking with Moving Beyond Cross-Multiply and Divide and the common frustration of fractions with Fraction Computation on Number Lines. \nThen\, in the afternoon\, we will offer concurrent sessions led by MN practitioners to help us wrestle with\, question\, digest\, and apply what we have learned to our specific contexts. \nThis is definitely a virtual event you will NOT want to miss! \nSchedule for the Day: \n8:40 am – Join meeting and test your sound  – Use your Registration Link in confirmation email\n8:45 – 10:30  Welcome & Keynote Workshop: Fraction Computation on Number Lines\, Elizabeth Peyser Number lines are a lovely sense-making model from early elementary to secondary mathematics\, but often the construction and understanding are a bit elusive to students and educators! Join us for hands-on learning to build and use this important tool. Participants will experience and practice the strategies to add\, subtract\, multiply\, and divide fractions using number lines. Digital tools and hands-on manipulatives will be explored.\n10:30 – 10:45 am Break\n10:45 – 12:30 pm Keynote Workshop: Moving Beyond Cross Multiply & Divide\, Elizabeth Peyser – Many adults have difficulty with ratio and proportional understanding. Cross multiply and divide gets answers\, but does not produce ratio reasoning. We will explore several visual models that help with ratio understanding\, develop proportional reasoning and connect to linear algebra.\n12:30 – 1:15 pm Lunch Break\n1:15 – 2:00 pm Concurrent Session 1(Choose one)\na) Session #1 – Formative Assessment: Moving Beyond Cross Multiply & Divide\, Facilitators: Mark Trushkowsky\, CUNY Adult Literacy and HSE Program and Katy Chiqui\, Minneapolis ABE – In this session\, we will focus on the content from the morning’s session Moving Beyond Cross Multiply and Divide. Specifically\, we will analyze student work samples for understanding of the content presented in the problems. Facilitators will share a framework with guiding questions for utilizing student work in order to make strategic instructional decisions. Come to this session if you want to apply what you learned during Liz Peyser’s workshop!\n(b) Session #2 – Formative Assessment – Fraction Computation on Number Lines\, Facilitator:  Lindsey Pust\, ATLAS Numeracy Coordinator – In this session\, we will focus on the content from the morning’s session Fraction Computation on Number Lines. Specifically\, we will analyze student work samples for understanding of the content presented in the problems. Facilitators will share a framework with guiding questions for utilizing student work in order to make strategic instructional decisions. Come to this session if you want to apply what you learned during Liz Peyser’s workshop!\n(c) Session #3 – Reflection on the Arcs – Moving Beyond Cross Multiply & Divide\, Facilitators: Tom Kroeger\, Roseville Adult Learning Center and Marcie Vaiphei\, SPPS – Hubbs – This is a great session for those who want to pause and reflect on the morning’s session Moving Beyond Cross Multiply and Divide. We will spend time deepening our understanding of the content progression of this arc\, asking clarification questions about the content and practicing articulating the connection between the different stages of this content progression.\n(d) Session #4 – Reflection on the Arcs – Fraction Computation on Number Lines\, Facilitators:  Andy Albee\, Robbinsdale Adult Academic Program and Justine Hill\, DOC: MCF-Faribault – This is a great session for those who want to pause and reflect on the morning’s session Fraction Computation on Number Lines. We will spend time deepening our understanding of the content progression of this arc\, asking clarification questions about the content and practicing articulating the connection between the different stages of this content progression.\n2:00 – 2:15 pm – Break\n2:15 – 3:00 pm – Concurrent Session 2 (Choose one) – Repeat of all 4 sessions

Our apologies if you are located outside of Minnesota! Please note that you are welcome to access our Cultural Competency resource library.\n\nThere is a great deal more to cultural competency than using the right words or choosing multicultural readings. This training will introduce adult educators to concepts and skills needed to start on the journey to becoming a more culturally competent educator. Per MN Statutes 122A.181 and 122A.182\, and MN Administrative Rule 8710.7100 every teacher in Minnesota who is seeking relicensure needs to complete the cultural competency training requirement. This PELSB-approved cultural competency training is aligned to MN Administrative Rule 8710.0310 Subpart 1D and provides Minnesota adult educators the opportunity to learn together through dialogue\, activities\, and reflective practices.  Come join us in advancing your skills and knowledge for a more culturally responsive adult teaching and learning environment. Facilitated by Dr. Rose Wan-Mui Chu and Andrea Echelberger. \nNote: This is a two-part training from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm on BOTH April 16 and April 30. You must attend both days in full to meet the PELSB requirement. The training will not be recorded. \nIf you require ASL Interpretation\, please contact Gail Rutan at grutan01@hamline.edu \n\nDr. Rose Wan-Mui Chu has dedicated her professional life to the tireless pursuit of education equity and excellence for children and youth. Rose brings over 20+ years of rich and diverse cross-sector experiences. She is a Senior Policy Fellow at Minnesota Education Equity Partnership\, leading the TeachMN20/20 collective impact initiative to advance systems change to create and retain a racially diverse teacher workforce. TeachMN20/20 aims to demystify and elevate the teaching profession by changing the public narrative about teaching (see ImprintU.org)\, and to catalyze collaborative engagement towards collective action\, accountability and impact.  Rose also serves as the Training and Technical Assistant Consultant with Youthprise’s federally funded Opportunity Reboot initiative since Fall 2015. She supports community-based organizations in Minnesota to re-engage “opportunity youth” in education and work through a youth development lens. Most recently\, Rose was a member of the curriculum development team and is an endorsed trainer for the required Cultural Competency Training for teachers under the MN Professional Educator Standards and Licensing Board.  She has a diverse professional service portfolio and consulting experience\, from coaching math teachers\, preparing teacher candidates for math licensure exams\, to designing/facilitating community engagement convenings and activities. From serving as an equity thought partner in conference planning and execution\, to facilitating systems thinking and systems change theories and practices with organization leaders. Rose was elected to the school board of the Roseville Area Schools and began her first term in January 2020. \nHer original Industrial and Systems Engineering background\, coupled with her experience as a classroom teacher have continued to ground her life’s work in educational reform and transformation. She is professor emerita at Metropolitan State University\, where she has previously been a faculty and department chair at the Urban Teacher Program. Rose also held executive leadership positions as Assistant Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Education\, and as interim Dean of Urban Education at Metropolitan State University. \n\n \nIn 2004\, Andrea Echelberger began a two-year AmeriCorps position in St. Paul teaching adult refugees and immigrants English\, and she’s never looked back. Throughout her teaching career\, she has worked with a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and language levels\, and while she’s loved every class that she’s taught\, literacy level learners are her favorite group to teach. After five years of teaching with Literacy Minnesota\, she left in 2013 to work with the U.S. English Language Fellowship program in Phnom Penh\, Cambodia.  Andrea returned in the fall of 2015 to take up a position teaching the Basic English Class at the Open Door Learning Center – Lake Street. In 2016\, Andrea became the ESL Training Coordinator at Literacy Minnesota\, where she conducts interactive and engaging professional development for Minnesota teachers and tutors. She received her MAESL from Hamline University and holds an ABE Minnesota Teaching License from the University of Minnesota. \nAndrea is continuously humbled and inspired by the lessons and stories that she hears from her learners every day\, and is passionate about helping the people that she works with develop their voices in English so that they and their families are able to thrive in Minnesota.
