SUMMARY:LGBTQIA+ Topics in ABE Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: FRI. 5/14/21 \nWhat do welcoming spaces in adult education look like? How can we make sure LGBTQIA+ learners\, volunteers and professionals feel they belong? In this session\, ABE professionals in the LGBTQIA+ community will invite participants to reflect on and discuss topics of gender and sexuality in ESL/ABE classrooms and instruction. Participants will brainstorm how to include more queer representation in adult education curricula\, program environments and materials. Presenters will provide lesson examples for teaching gender-inclusive language. It is our intention to create a space where participants are welcome but not required to share aspects of their identity or experiences related to the topic.

SUMMARY:TechChat: Using Classkick in the Virtual Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Registration Deadline: THU. 4/29/21 \nClasskick is an ed tech tool that allows an instructor to build web-based slides that can be presentations\, assessments\, interactive assignments\, or all three at once. An instructor can show the presentation to students via projector or screen sharing. Simultaneously or later as homework\, the instructor can provide a single URL to all students. Students access the presentation via a browser\, and each gets their own set of slides for interactive work. Slides can include images\, including PDFs; audio (uploaded mp3s or recorded within the application by the instructor); fill-in areas for students to type\, draw\, or write in; links or embedded video; a simple voice recording tool for students; a multiple-choice tool; and manipulatives chosen by the instructor. Classkick requires no login or password for students. It can be used on Mac OS or Windows computers and Chromebooks. There are apps for iPhone and iPad. There is no Android app\, but learners or teachers can use Chrome on Android devices. Classkick is like Nearpod but a little less sophisticated\, and less expensive. \nPlease join ABE teacher Sarah Pradt for an overview of Classkick and a demonstration of some ways she has used it to teach basic computer skills like drag and drop\, copy and paste\, and typing on a form. You will have a chance to practice Classkick to see how you can create activities that allow students to practice language or math and computer skills at the same time.
