Building Sentence-Writing Fluency Through Timed Writing Practice

This spotlight features two resources from the Iowa Reading Research Center that focus on building sentence-level writing fluency through timed, repeated writing practice. It includes an article explaining the approach and an example lesson plan that shows how timed writing sessions can be used and adapted in the classroom.

Assessing Student Writing

Dr. Derek Rodgers details how the number of correct writing sequences (CWS) and incorrect writing sequences (IWS) students generate during a timed writing are sensitive and effective measures of student writing.

How to Use Interesting Photos to Help Students Become Better Writers

Two teachers explain their routine for English language learners to use “What’s Going On in This Picture?” from The New York Times. This routine helps students learn how to create a claim and support that claim with evidence found in a photograph. They also engage in academic conversations that stimulate academic vocabulary development and critical thinking skills.

Just Write! Guide

The Just Write! Guide is a resource guide for ABE teachers, intended to increase familiarity with evidence-based writing instruction and to facilitate translation of research findings into teaching practices and products that will enhance the quality of instruction delivered to adult learners.

Just Write! Guide

This resource from Teaching Excellence in Adult Literacy (TEAL) “aims to help adult education instructors improve the writing instruction they already use in their programs.” It is not a curriculum, but a guide to increase familiarity with evidence-based writing instruction and translate research findings into teaching practices.
