Do you need to brush up your own writing skills before teaching your students how to write more effectively? This website provides hundreds of free writing resources, columns, and exercises for writers and teachers of writers. Examples include apostrophes, capitalization, commas, editing, hyphens, letter writing, persuasive writing, punctuation, and verbs.

### Tiered Sentence Combining (TSC, 2014)

Explicit sentence combining instruction can help them write sentences that are longer, more complex or interesting, and varied in structure. This evidence-based resource provides a starting point that may ultimately improve ABE students' sentence composition, complexity, and comprehension.

### Vocabulary 2 – Academic Word Lists

### Teaching Analogy Phonics (TAP, 2015)

### Morpheme Matrices (2018)

This resource is for helping students who are ready to move beyond phonics and simple words. It focuses on morphological awareness: how morphemes such as prefixes, Latin roots, Greek forms, and suffixes combine or assemble to form multi-syllable words and sometimes change meaning, part of speech, or usage.

### Modified Phonics Assessment and Testing Copies

A modified Minnesota version of Sylvia Greene's Informal Word Analysis Inventory, Levels I and II. It includes processes for conducting as an individual reading test or group spelling test, a Teacher Copy for scoring, and six Student Copies for testing knowledge of sequential phonics patterns.

### Intermediate Word Study (2012)

This ATLAS-supported resource includes: (1) a public domain test for identifying students' approximate grade level performance in word reading or decoding, (2) a series of 'mini-lessons' for teaching multi-syllable decoding with compounds, syllable types and rules, common suffixes, prefixes, and roots, and (3) an appendix of student handouts.

### CCRS in the ABE Classroom: Literacy Level ESL

This lesson focuses on Shift 1: Complexity; Reading Anchor 1, Levels A and B; Reading Anchor 2, Level A; Speaking and Listening Anchor 2, Level A; and Reading Foundations Anchors 1 and 2. The learners: 1) Ask and answer questions about key details in a text, 2) Ask and answer wh- questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, 3) Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text, 4) Confirm understanding of an oral text by asking and answering questions, and 5) Isolate the initial and final sounds of spoken words.

### CCRS in the ABE Classroom: Beginning ESL

This lesson focuses on Shift 2: Evidence; Reading Anchors 1, 3, and 7, Level A; Speaking and Listening Anchors 1 and 6, Level A; and Language Anchor 1. The learners: 1) Ask and answer questions about key details in a text, 2) Describe the connection between individuals, 3) Use illustrations to describe key ideas, 4) Speak audibly, express thoughts clearly and succinctly, 5) Follow rules for discussions & responding to comments/questions in an exchange, and 6) Understand and use question words, possessive pronouns, and the progressive verb tense.
