Guided Reading Prompts and Questions to Improve Comprehension

This blog post from Scholastic.com contains excellent teacher practices and materials that can be adapted for improving reading comprehension at any level. The post includes printable PDFs of a teacher Reading Prompt Booklet, "reading prompt" bookmarks for learners, and guided reading question cards for small-group or independent work. The reading prompts are written for a third grade reading level, which can easily be used with intermediate and advanced adult ESL learners.

Wisc-Online

Wisc-Online is a repository of high-quality educational resources that are free for learners and teachers. It includes over 2,500 learning objects (such as assessments, animations, and templates) for topics ranging from language arts to career clusters, to manufacturing, to math. It can be used in the classroom or independently by learners.

Literacy Education and Second Langauge Learning for Adults (LESLLA)

This website provides information about current research with low literacy level adult English language learners, as well as numerous resources for teaching and supporting beginning level learners.

Problem-Based Learning at University of Delaware

The Problem-Based Learning resource collection from the University of Delaware contains a variety of tools that teachers can use to begin implementing a problem-based learning approach in their classrooms, including evaluation tools, videos, and over 100 problem-based learning scenarios with lesson plans.

2020 Census Resources – NCL

In the spring of 2020, households across the United States will be asked to participate in the census. The National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) put together this collection of resources to help Adult Education professionals talk about the census and help learners understand why their participation is vitally important.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) Resources

In this resource library you can learn more about project-based learning (PBL) and see sample projects contributed by local MN ABE practitioners.

CareerKit Project (NYSED/CUNY)

The NYSED/CUNY CareerKit Project is a library of hundreds of contextualized high-quality lessons that instructors can pick and choose from to suit the needs of their learners and program. The kits were developed to introduce learners to careers in ten different sectors, while also building core reading, writing, research and math skills.

Paying for College Guide

According to the website, "For many people, how to pay for a college education is one of the first major financial decisions they'll make. These guides cover some of the big decisions you’ll face and will help you understand your options for financing your college education." 

Online Writing Lab (OWL)

This website offers resources for understanding and teaching prewriting, outlining, paragraphing, quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, avoiding plagiarism, and many other writing skills for students at grade levels 7-12.

Common Core State Standards – Appendix C: Samples of Student Writing

The writing samples in this resource reflect the three types of writing required by the standards. Each sample is clearly annotated with descriptors pulled from the language of the standards. These samples were generated from a variety of conditions including in-class or homework tasks, on-demand assessment or research projects. 

Center for Adult Literacy Text Library

An electronic library of over 1600 texts at grade levels 3.0-7.9. Users (teachers or learners) select from “easier, medium, or harder” stories and topics such as Health, Food, Babies, Children, Teenagers, Families, Advice, Non-Fiction, Fiction, Jobs & Work, Money, History, and Science.

The Times in Plain English

This website contains free "Plain English Version" articles about current world and national news or events. All of the articles are edited by Arthur Schiff and grade-leveled according to Flesch-Kincaid. In addition to articles, the website offers Tips for Teachers, which provides text-dependent questions.

Sound City Reading

This phonetic reading program website offers free PDF files of phonics books, workbooks, wall charts, flashcards, games, and activities at five levels. Materials are designed to be used sequentially, from the Learning the Alphabet through Basic and Advanced Phonics Patterns; however, it is also useful for older readers at beginning levels.

Newsela – Fluency

From the Newsela homepage, teachers can sign up for FREE and unlimited access to printable news articles, about the same topic but at 5 different lexile scores, and all aligned with CCRS reading anchors. This resource is extremely helpful for fluency instruction!

Newsela – Comprehension

Teachers and students can sign up for FREE and unlimited access to relevant news articles and quizzes, at 5 different lexile scores, all aligned with CCRS reading anchors. This varied and vertical text selection allows an entire class to read, discuss, and comprehend the same non-fiction content!
