Presenter: May Vang Swanson, math instructor
Social justice issues can be intimidating and uncomfortable, but social justice issues have a place in education and especially in math. Last year, May Vang Swanson designed a math course around four major themes: who are mathematicians, the power of mathematics, mathematics in our community, and mathematics for social change. Students worked through their own identity, their own stance around math, their own city data, and a social justice issue of their own choosing. In this webinar, May will share her design process and also invite you to share your ideas. Participants can expect to gain greater confidence in teaching social justice through the lens of math as well as learn structures and routines they can implement.
