9:00 am – 12:00 pm: DAN MEYER

Keynote: Math Is Power Not Punishment (Dan Meyer)
We often offer students shortcuts, strategies, and skills before students understand their origin, their value, and the millions of hours of work they’ve saved mathematicians throughout history. We’ll look at techniques for putting students in a position to need these challenging skills so they feel like power, not punishment.

Math Without Mistakes (Dan Meyer)
Math teachers have worked to destigmatize mistakes, but we continue to diagnose as mistaken what is instead very purposeful student thinking. We’ll learn about curriculum, technology, and strategies that celebrate and develop that thinking instead.

12:00-12:45 pm: LUNCH

CONCURRENT SESSIONS (choose one):

Concurrent Session 1 (12:45 – 3pm)
Building Curiosity and Making Sense of Math (Presenters: Katy Chiqui and Marcie Vaiphei): On the surface, math at CCRS levels A and B can seem straightforward. In actuality, there are rich relationships and concepts that students need to explore and make sense of when building math proficiency. In this session, you will experience depth and rigor within specific A/B standards, and utilize guidelines and resources to plan a rich task that allows students to experience depth and rigor within the A/B standards.

Concurrent Session 2 (12:45 – 3pm)
Exploring Variables in Word Problems, Graphs, and Equations (Presenters: Amber Delliger and Rebecca Strom): When will I use algebra in real life? That is a question many of us have asked ourselves, and we certainly have heard from our students! In this session, we will explore the relationships between math variables and representations, and the context they represent. Experience contextualizing and decontextualizing math with level C/D standards, and walk away with resources and strategies for facilitating similar experiences with your students.

Concurrent Session 3 (12:45 – 1:45pm)
Moving Math Forward in Your Program: A Session for Program Leaders (Presenters: Patsy Egan and Astrid Liden):
Let’s talk! Managers, coordinators, and lead teachers will have a chance to network with colleagues around improving math offerings at their respective programs. In this session, we will identify barriers to the development and delivery of math instruction and the supports needed to improve our programs’ math offerings. We will also highlight ways MN Adult Ed programs have been able to successfully incorporate math instruction for all learners. Come join the conversation!
