Cultural Perspectives for Diverse Adult Learners
August 4, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT FreeRegistration Deadline: THU. 8/4/22
This session explores how cultural identities and experiences impact student-instructor interactions and shape the way we make meaning of the world. Interactions are usually improved when direct instruction is adapted to a learner’s cultural needs and preferences. Participants will explore cultural perspectives and the need for cultural humility related to enhancing the outcomes of adult learners and educators’ professional development. Learning will be acquired through breakout groups, short videos, discussion and facilitation of the topic.
Learning Objectives:
- Gain awareness of one’s cultural perspectives, social location and the need for cultural humility in Adult Basic Education.
- Explore unacknowledged cultural differences and power differentials and the impact on education.
- Consider how culturally responsive care can be used to address disparities in education.
- Review strategies for asking about a person’s cultural identity and influences on learners’ connectedness.
- Expect and accept a lack of closure as a commitment of life-long learning.
