Teaching Reading to Adults Self-Paced Course

The free online Teaching Reading to Adults self-paced course focuses on what evidence-based reading instruction (EBRI) is, how to assess adult learners in each of the 4 essential components of reading, and strategies for teaching EBRI. Feedback is provided by the ATLAS Literacy Coordinator. The course is intended for ABE  administrators, teachers, support staff, and volunteers who may be new to teaching reading to adult learners or who may have a lot of experience!

Participants can earn 16 CEUs by completing this asynchronous online course.

• Note: Those with an Administrative license from PELSB can receive Administrative CEUs by request.

The objectives of this course are to:

• Identify the foundation of evidence-based reading instruction for adults
• Define the four essential components of reading, their interrelationships and why each component is important for reading.
• Identify diagnostic assessment tasks for each of the four essential components and use results to select materials and inform instruction.
• Select-level-appropriate approaches and activities for teaching the essential components to adult learners.
• Reflect on reading assessment and instruction for adult learners in one’s classroom or program (for administrators).
