Welcoming Counter-Stories in the ABE Classroom
December 3, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CST FreeRegistration Deadline: THU. 12/3/20
Counter-stories are a tool used by minoritized communities to tell stories that reflect their experiences and knowledge. Counter-stories challenge the grand narratives accepted and advanced by the majority in society. As adult learners are invited to speak openly and share their experiences and knowledge, counter-storytelling can be a powerful tool for empowering learners in the ABE classroom. The presenter will share different strategies to use with adult learners in adult ESL and GED classrooms while engaging them in telling their counter-stories in response to ideas, images, and narratives about immigrants, immigrant learners, and native-born learners. The instructional purpose of counter-storytelling and ways of eliciting and welcoming counter-stories in the ABE classroom with different kinds of adult learners will also be discussed.
