iCivics

iCivics was founded by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, whose goal was to transform “civic education for every student in America with innovating, truly engaging games and resources” (https://www.icivics.org/our-founder). Each topical lesson includes a plan, varied activities and assessments, and an answer key.

A majority of the site’s units and lessons focus on the U.S. Government, from its founding to its structure and function – e.g., the Constitution, the three branches, and civil rights. Other units deal with the economy, geography, and encouraging involvement with state, county, and local affairs. Several units are designed to not only develop students’ content knowledge but to improve their reading, writing, and speaking and listening skills.

iCivics also provides a number of lesson-related games for student use. These games are a fun and interactive way for students to explore topics such as the lawmaking process, presidential elections, and guiding newcomers through the path to citizenship.

The classroom materials, which meet the Minnesota State Social Studies Standards, are written for middle to high school leveled students. Materials can be downloaded, and there are options for creating online classes for student computer work. Strategies are also provided for lessons and activities that can be best used in a 1:1 setting.
