The Adult Education Equity Rubric

Have you ever wished you had a tool to help you figure out areas of equity to further develop in your program but everything is for K-12 programs or you didn’t know where to start? A group of participants in the statewide Racial Equity Community of Practice thought just that. The group has adapted several tools to create an equity rubric for adult education classrooms and programs. Topics included in the rubric:

  • Educator Beliefs
  • Relationships and Culture
  • Access and Participation
  • School Culture

The group is also working on adding additional topics.

Why is an equity rubric needed?

The rubric is intended to fully support all students in our programs, understand their needs, and make our programs more culturally relevant. Just like we have learning standards, equity standards help give structure and opportunities for accountability to make sure all learners develop their full learning potential and meet their goals.

Tips for using the rubric:

  • Break it up into bite-size chunks. DO NOT DO THE WHOLE THING AT THE SAME TIME.
  • If you don’t understand a word or concept…circle it, do research, reach out to us with questions and we can provide some guidance.
  • Agree on terms and concepts with your program to have shared language in your conversations.
  • Do this with someone. We all have gaps, plus helps with accountability and brainstorming.
  • Make adequate time and space.
  • Embrace mistakes as part of the process.
