New General Service List Finder and Sorter
EAPFoundation.com offers a free electronic tool for finding, highlighting, and sorting high-frequency words (of general service or everyday use) in texts. The word source is the New General Service List or NGSL, a 2013 update of the General Service List. The NGSL includes 2801 words used frequently in both spoken and written English. It serves as a foundational word list for deciding which highly used words are most important to teach. It is separate from, but underlies, the New Academic Word List or NAWL.
- Enter or copy and paste the text into the box.
- Click submit.
- The text will appear with highlighted general service words.
- Those same words are then sorted by 1st 1000, 2nd 1000, 3rd 1000, and “Off-list (i.e. NOT NGSL words).”
