New General Service List Finder and Sorter

EAPFoundation.com offers a free electronic tool for finding, highlighting, and sorting high-frequency words (of general service or everyday use) in texts. The word source is the New General Service List or NGSL, a 2013 update of the General Service List. The NGSL includes 2801 words used frequently in both spoken and written English. It serves as a foundational word list for deciding which highly used words are most important to teach. It is separate from, but underlies, the New Academic Word List or NAWL.

  1. Enter or copy and paste the text into the box.
  2. Click submit.
  3. The text will appear with highlighted general service words.
  4. Those same words are then sorted by 1st 1000, 2nd 1000, 3rd 1000, and “Off-list (i.e. NOT NGSL words).”
