Tools of Algebra: Linear Functions, Part 1
From the CUNY Math Packet
With these materials, students learn the concepts to flexibly create, interpret, and use linear functions.
Part 1 focuses on the following topics:
- Number patterns, repeating patterns, growing patterns, and visual patterns
- How to use input/output machines to understand the basic structure of functions
- How functions can be represented in 4 connected ways – in words, using tables, using graphs, and using equations
Students learn how each of those forms work together to express linear relationships. NOTE: Students should feel confident locating and plotting points on the coordinate plane before working with these materials.
Please also note that these materials also have a Part 2, which builds on what students learned in Part 1.
