Ideal for any election cycle or as a way to gather background information, the mission of Vote Smart is to provide free, factual, and unbiased information on candidates and elected officials at the federal, state and local levels. By entering a politician’s name, Vote Smart provides biographical information, voting records/positions on various issues, and endorsements. A record of the politician’s speeches and contribution history are also listed.
In addition, the site provides an election calendar and helpful links related to ballot measures, election contacts, and voter registration by locality. For the classroom, Vote Smart has developed a free K-12-level government curriculum with lessons ranging from the three branches of government to the role of special interest groups. Vote Smart also offers an online “Government 101” tutorial that provides informative overviews on all aspects of American politics.
