Attention Teachers of Low-Literacy Adult ESL Students!

Task Force Members Needed!

Do you teach ESL to adult students with little or no literacy in their primary languages? At ATLAS, we are planning to do focused professional development (PD) in the coming year for teachers like you, and we would like some input on what instructors in your context could really use to make your teaching life easier.

To that end, we are assembling a small task force to tackle some important questions.

Please consider joining ATLAS Director Patsy Egan and consultants Andrea Echelberger (Robbinsdale) and Katrina Benson (Neighborhood House) to help us do big thinking!

What is the overall purpose of the Low-Literacy Adult ESL PD Task Force?

  1. To clarify current, persistent, pressing challenges in this specific context that have PD implications.
  2. To generate ideas for PD projects ATLAS could take on that would enhance teaching and learning of adult students in MN ABE who are learning English and acquiring alphabetic print literacy for the first time.

When will the task force meet?

The first meeting is already set: Friday, February 16, via Zoom from 12:30-2:30pm, mandatory. 

There are 3 options for the second meeting, and you will just need to come to one of them:

  • Fri. Feb. 23, 12:30-2:30pm (in person in St. Paul)
  • Fri. Mar. 8, 10:00-11:30am (virtual)
  • Fri. Mar. 15, 1:00-2:30pm (virtual)

Interested in joining this task force?

Fill out the application by Thursday, February 8 at the very latest.  The commitment is two meetings, plus some in-between thinking and documenting of your ideas for us. We realize this is short notice, and we thank you in advance!

Task force members will receive CEUs and a $125 stipend for coming to 2 meetings, plus our gratitude and the possibility of working on the projects we generate in the coming months.
