#IamABE

After the 2016 election, a group of ABE teachers gathered together, looking for ways to answer the question: How can we support our ABE students?

We realized that one of the main issues teachers and students are facing is that many community members outside of ABE classrooms do not understand how legislation impacts students.  We also didn’t have outlets for students to share their ideas, needs, and complex identities that weren’t overshadowed by political agendas. So, we set out to create that space.

#IamABE curriculum

#IamABE is a 3- lesson standards-aligned curriculum, developed at three different levels, geared towards Adult Basic Education students. Designed to be easily implemented in any classroom, lessons and materials are available at the beginning, intermediate, and Advanced/GED levels.  Lessons range from understanding First Amendment rights, to voicing one’s political opinions on social media. This project-based curriculum builds towards launching a social media campaign to elevate student voices, and to give students the opportunity to have their voices and stories be heard.

Purpose

  • Amplifying students’ voices about the current administration
  • Creating more awareness around who ABE serves and what it does
  • Educating students about ways they can communicate with the government
  • Educating the general public about how this administration is affecting people’s lives
