Coursera – A Newly Approved DL Platform with an IT Focus

Coursera is a newly-approved distance learning (DL) platform for MN Adult Education. The platform offers a variety of courses, degrees, and other learning options from universities and companies.

Thousands of free online courses, on a wide range of topics, including computer science to psychology are available through Coursera. The professional certificates typically take 4-7 months to complete. You can find detailed platform information for proxy hour collection on the Literacy MN distance learning page.

At Hubbs Center (St. Paul ABE), we’re using the Coursera course titled Google IT Support Professional Certificate for those interested in entry-level IT jobs. The content of this course is similar to Comp TIA A+. Reading levels in Coursera courses vary greatly, and often depend on the technical content covered in the course. But, generally, we’ve found that CCRS level C or higher reading level would be best; however, some higher level B readers, or those with some previous work or learning experiences with the content, could also do well.

Grow with Google is a program that offers schools free access to the Google Professional Certificate Courses. These are special courses, provided at no cost to programs by Google through December 31, 2025. Programs should apply for these Coursera licenses here by December 18, 2024.

Certificate options include:

  • IT Support Professional
  • Digital Marketing & E-Commerce Professional
  • Project Management Professional
  • Data Analytics Professional
