PANDA’S Adult Learner Intervention

PANDA’S Adult Learner Intervention

Do you have a student who has not made a level gain? Has significant difficulties in reading, writing or math? Is easily distracted, forgetful or acts out in class? PANDA’s 4-step Adult Learner Intervention provides information and strategies to help your student succeed in the classroom.

The Adult Learner Intervention was developed to assist ABE teachers with students who are experiencing learning challenges or disabilities.*
–STEPS 1 to 3 are meant to be accessed by the teacher, on their own, to obtain information that may be useful in helping their students in class.
–STEP 4 of the Intervention includes a student interview and screening process which PANDA staff initiate after the teacher reaches out in STEP 3.
–After the interview process, PANDA will provide the teacher with instructional strategies, resources, and adaptive equipment to help their students succeed.
*Please note: this process is not intended to diagnose or label the student with any particular disability. PANDA does not provide tutoring or one-on-one instruction for students.

The process is in four sequential steps:

STEP 1: Select the appropriate link, depending if your student was born in the U.S. or is an English Language Learner (ELL) student.

STEP 2: Go through the seven scenarios provided to determine what challenges your student has. You will then be linked to classroom strategies to help your student. As an example, here is Scenario 1:

Student tends to be:

  • Easily distracted
  • Starts and stops classwork
  • Misses details on worksheets
  • Often loses homework
  • Has trouble sitting for long periods of time

If the majority of the above characteristics describes your student, choose at least three of the five following strategies to use with your student for the next six class periods.

  1. Have the student sit at the front of the class.
  2. Allow scheduled routine breaks throughout class in order to refocus.
(Example 5-10 minute break every hour.)
  3. Only give two instructional steps at a time, breaking information down.
  4. Give both visual and oral instructions.
  5. Allow extra time for tests and testing in a private room.

Find more ADHD instructional strategies on the PANDA website.

STEP 3: If your student continues to struggle with learning after implementation of strategies from the website, contact PANDA for a phone consultation.

STEP 4: Once all three steps are completed, if you are still in need of assistance, complete the Adult Learner Intervention Interview and Screening Process.
