Adult Academic Program’s International Fashion Show Lets Students Shine with Pride!

Lights, cameras, fashion!

That is what students at the Adult Academic Program (AAP) can expect every year when the school holds its annual International Fashion Show. AAP has held its award-winning fashion show for eight years, and the students and staff love it! Coming from over seventy different countries, AAP students get a chance to wear their traditional clothes and share their culture with fellow classmates and school staff. On fashion show day, in addition to an overflow of pride, students and staff are enveloped with a sense of camaraderie and school spirit.

“On the day of the fashion show, we all help each other get ready,” said Michael, a GED student.

Before walking down the runway, each student writes about the significance of color in their outfit and when they would wear the outfit. Their teacher then reads the description while the students model their clothes.

Many AAP students are parents whose preschool children attend classes in AAP’s Family Literacy Program. This year, some of the children joined their parents and shared the spotlight on the runway.

“Our annual fashion show is one of my favorite school events!” said Madeleine, a former EL student who now works in AAP’s front office.

AAP’s International Fashion Show has enhanced their school community, improved participants’ English skills, promoted leadership skills, and contributed to the pride students have for their home country and their school. In the world of Adult Education, it is incredibly moving to see students on stage sharing the culture they love and knowing they practiced many of their English skills to get to that moment.
