New Canvas Course: Teaching Reading to Adults (Self-Paced)

ATLAS is excited to introduce our new Canvas course, Teaching Reading to Adults, designed for adult basic education (ABE) administrators, teachers, and support staff. This self-paced, asynchronous course offers flexibility while providing a deep dive into evidence-based reading instruction (EBRI) for adult learners.

Whether you’re experienced in teaching reading or new to adult education, this course is tailored for educators at all levels of professional experience. You’ll learn how to assess adult learners in the four essential components of reading (alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension), apply evidence-based strategies to your instruction, and reflect on the impact of these practices in your classroom or program.

Teaching Reading to Adults is the culmination of years of work with EBRI in Minnesota and input from many talented adult educators both from Minnesota and across the country.

A hybrid version of this course was piloted in spring 2024. Some participant comments:

“I’m so happy I signed up because my growth has been huge and now I have the resources that I have been needing.”

“I really like the various assignment options. It was very helpful being able to pick one that worked for my situation and one that I had the time to complete.”

“What has stood out to me the most with the students that I work with, is their high needs for improved alphabetics and fluency, and their high needs for vocabulary knowledge.”

This self-paced course is packed with visuals, videos, and links to key research, instructional materials, teaching examples, and assessment materials. Many modules have options for assignments to fit the needs and contexts of participants. Kristine Kelly, ATLAS Language & Literacy Coordinator, will provide individualized feedback on submissions, including additional suggestions and relevant resources.

Satisfactory completion of the course will result in 16 CEUs, making it a valuable resource for professional development. In addition, the course content is flexible. You can complete the entire course for CEUs or use the modules as a reference tool for specific topics of interest. You are free to move through the content as needed. If you were a participant in STAR training or an EBRI Study Circle or EBRI Webinar Series, course content would be a good refresher or extension. We also have big plans for expansion in FY25, including modules tailored to emergent adult English Learners, high school equivalency learners, and text complexity!

Whether you’re looking to earn CEUs or simply deepen your knowledge of EBRI, this self-paced Canvas course is for you!
