Your Program’s Turn to Try Remote Assessment
Marty Olsen, Assessment TrainerAre you interested in testing your students remotely? Read further to learn about an opportunity to participate in a pilot program that will allow eligible students from your program to complete their CASAS testing remotely, free of charge!
This year the Assessment Training supplemental services grant included funding to create a Remote Assessment Hub for the state. The purpose of this Hub is to support Minnesota ABE agencies in enhancing their remote testing capacity and test scheduling needs in order to assist in achieving increased measurable skill gains in the state. For the purposes of the pilot, Minnesota ABE-funded programs can request that the Hub’s trained proctors facilitate remote CASAS post-tests for eligible students at no cost to the program. This is a pilot program for FY 25-26, and therefore limited Assessment Hub test appointments will be available.
The eligibility requirements are specific and strict for the purposes of this pilot, so please read them carefully to understand which students are eligible, and what process needs to be followed to refer a student to the Remote Testing Hub.
Eligible Students
There are specific eligibility requirements for students to participate in this pilot testing program. You will be asked to refer only students that meet the following requirements.
- The student needs to have previously tested with a computer-based test to be eligible for this service. This means they should have taken a CASAS eTest as a pretest. This ensures that they have a comfort level with computer-based testing.
- All levels of ABE/ASE students are eligible.
- ESL students need to be at NRS level 4 or higher to be eligible to test.
- Students have to have attended a minimum of 40 hours.
- The student has to have the appropriate technology to test remotely:
- Computer running at least Windows 10 (PC or Mac), Chromebook, or iPad that has CASAS eTests downloaded with internet access and a bandwidth of at least 2 megabits per second (Mbps) download speed.
The following tests will be offered:
- CASAS GOALS (Reading)
- CASAS GOALS 2 (Reading 2 and Math 2)
- CASAS STEPS (Reading)
- CASAS STEPS (Listening)
- After being referred by their program, students will need to respond to email from “Calendly.com to schedule their test.
- The student must be available to test at some time during the following times:
- Mondays 10-11:30 am
- Monday 6-7:30 pm
- Wednesday 6-7:30 pm
- Thursday 2:30-4 pm
- Select Fridays 10-11:30 am
- Select Saturdays 9-10:30 am
Program Responsibilities
By making a referral to the Remote Assessment Hub, your adult education program agrees to the following:
- Identify one staff member to make referrals to the Hub. This person should have access to SiD, knowledge of testing processes, and availability to serve as the point of contact for the Hub.
- Ensure that the student referred meets the eligibility requirements, including having completed a computer-based pretest (paper-based pretests are not permitted) and falling into the eligible NRS level.
- Ensure that the referred student has the technology capability for remote testing.
- Complete the online request form providing the required student demographic and test information.
- Inform the student of the testing referral to the Hub.
- Provide the student with a copy of Remote Testing Rules.
- Provide the student with a copy of Remote Testing Directions for Students Using Zoom.
