Scholarships Available for MN ABE Practitioners to Attend the 2020 MCTM Spring Conference!

For the last two years, ATLAS has funded a number of Minnesota ABE practitioners to attend the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) Spring Conference. This conference has quickly been added to the list of favorites by many who have attended! It’s a conference completely dedicated to math education. Teachers from Pre K-12, college, and adult education come together to talk about math teaching and learning, and this year ABE is marking its third year of both attending and presenting. If you teach math/numeracy in your setting, you won’t want to miss out!

At ATLAS, we believe that connecting with fellow educators makes our classroom practice stronger. While the ABE Math Institute has always been a great way to connect with other ABE teachers, we encourage you to attend the MCTM conference as well! This gathering is held in Duluth, and you can be  a part of a strong community of math teachers from an even broader variety of contexts from all corners of the state.

MCTM Spring 2020 Conference

The MCTM Spring Conference is a two-day event with national keynote speakers and workshop sessions led by math leaders at all academic levels (Pre K-12, ABE, and College), focused on a variety of math topics, teaching methods, resources, and more. Opportunities abound for networking and exploring exhibitors and vendors. This is a great opportunity to learn from and with your math colleagues!

Conference Topics

ATLAS has again connected with MCTM and MinnMATYC (Minnesota Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges) to plan an Adult Education strand. This means that in addition to a number of quality sessions provided by K-12 teachers about K-12 math content (which we all teach!), there will be an opportunity to attend sessions specifically addressing the needs of adult math learners.

You’ll see sessions led by seasoned ABE presenters focusing on sense-making instead of answer-getting in the classroom, using interactive math notebooks, contextualizing math, seeing quadratic equations in a new way, fostering community college partnerships, utilizing paper to better understand fractions, and more!

Conference Scholarships

ABE practitioners from across Minnesota can take advantage of this amazing opportunity, as ATLAS is excited to offer a number of scholarships for up to $500 each to help offset the costs of attending the conference. This scholarship can be used toward registration, hotel, and/or mileage/transportation. (You know we believe that math is best done with a friend, so think about carpooling and sharing a hotel to make the most of your scholarship money!)

NOTE: Hotels are filling up fast! If you’re planning on attending the conference, make your hotel reservations as soon as possible and mention that you are attending the MCTM conference, as some hotels are offering discounted rates for conference attendees. (Hint: you’ll be able to find more affordable options slightly farther from the venue).

We encourage all those who are interested in attending the conference to apply for a scholarship. Let’s build a strong showing at the conference this year and continue to expand ABE offerings at MCTM events in the future!

Hope to see you in April in Duluth!
