Thank you to everyone who joined Literacy Action Network and #IamABE at the MN State Capitol for Adult Education Day On The Hill on April 8! We had over 500 people in attendance and 14 programs represented – from as far as Bemidji! Students toured the Capitol and gathered in the Rotunda for speeches from fellow ABE students, instructors, and legislators. Programs took time at the Capitol to set up individual meetings with their legislators and discuss the LAN platform and how ABE serves the state.

The speaker panel included the following:

  • Ana Elena Townsley Torres, Student from Metro North ABE
  • Charity Koumedjro, Student from Cedar Valley Learning Center
  • Mee Kyung Ahn, Student from Burnsville ABE
  • Shouma Banerjee, Volunteer Tutor from Burnsville ABE
  • Barbara Gorski, Instructor from Burnsville ABE

Thank you also to Senator Kunesh, House Representative Youakim, and House Representative Rehrauer for speaking and supporting Adult Education!

This year, the LAN Legislative Committee also advocated for increased funding to eliminate waitlists, removal of barriers to online testing in Greater Minnesota, and making the Highschool Equivalency Waiver permanent. We worked with the lobbyist, funded by LAN membership, to draft and promote two bills (HF2152 and SF2341) to increase funding for Adult Education.
