Finding Peace in a Chaotic World
Wendy Sweeney, MA Licensed Psychologist, PANDA Manger Moira Knutson, PANDA AdministratorPracticing self-care to reduce stress and handle the chaos around us needs to begin with ourselves before we can pass it on to our students. While the internet is an awesome place to search for tools to help with self-care don’t let it be your only tool.
Learn a breathing exercise and practice out on your front step or on a 10-minute walk away from the classroom. Practice meditation while sitting on a park bench or in your classroom with the lights down low.
- Breathe: Breathing exercises can help you reduce stress, relax and improve your mood.
- Meditate
- Nature
- Taking the time to listen to Mother Nature can significantly reduce stress hormones and boost your mood positively.
- Use time out in nature to practice breathing and meditation!
- If unable to find yourself immersed in nature, there are many nature sounds available online:
- Unplug from social media
- Limit your time on social media, set a time limit or avoid it during meals or bedtime.
- Designate tech-free zones in your home or classroom where you won’t use technology.
- Replace your time usually spent on social media connecting with family and friends, in person!
- Exercise: Give yourself and your students time to exercise. It can be as simple as a 10 minute walk around the building or a 5 minute yoga video.
- Laugh: Laughter is the best medicine! A good, hearty laugh relieves the body of physical tension and stress.
