Reading Skills Stories
This section of the Literacy Centre of Expertise website offers both interactive (with audio) and downloadable (PDF) student and teacher materials in four different Reading Skills Series:
The Phonics Stories deal with oral language, vocabulary and comprehension, all written for adult language learners. This is a compilation of four 10-story collections of phonics readers for adults. The readers can be accessed as PDFs or an interactive online format. The four collections include: Initial Sounds, Short Vowels, Long Vowels, and Comparing Vowels. The Initial Sounds Collection is for learners who are beginning to engage with books—possibly for the first time in English or any language. These stories help students recognize that print carries meaning and build foundational skills.
Each Phonics Story Collection has an accompanying teacher’s guide as well as an instructional video demonstrating practical ways to support these early literacy skills.
