Exciting news from ABE Summer Institute!

Planning for ABE Summer Institute is ramping up and there are so many things to look forward to!

Keynote

On the first day of the conference, Wednesday, August 14, we welcome this year’s keynote speaker, Jaylani Hussein. Hussein is the executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) and has worked as the Community Liaison Officer at Metro State University and as a Planner for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. His family emigrated from Somalia to Minnesota in 1993 and he is trilingual (English, Somali, Arabic). Hussein holds degrees in Community Development and City Planning from St. Cloud State University and Political Science from North Dakota State University. He specializes in the areas of urban planning, community development, youth development (with over 8 years experience in working in juvenile treatment centers for court adjudicated youth), and legal and civil rights.

Silent Auction and Awards Banquet

The awards banquet and silent auction will take place on the second evening of the conference, Thursday, August 15. Proceeds from the auction directly benefit ABE professionals and learners by providing Summer Institute scholarships, marketing materials, legislative efforts, etc. Last year we raised over $1500 to help further the efforts of Literacy Action Network and to provide conference scholarships to many ABE professionals across the state. With your help, the committee hopes to set a new record for 2019! If you or your consortium would like to donate a themed basket or single item to the silent auction, email Ali Beckman at [email protected] with your intent to donate and fill out the donation form.
