Course Description: Covers all aspects of a Certified Nursing Assistant’s job responsibilities. Nineteen units (“steps”) include being a caregiver, working in long-term care, patient rights, communication and understanding people; measurements, documenting care, infection control and safety; positioning/transferring patients, nutrition, elimination; common illnesses, dementia; residents’ environment, providing personal care, restorative care and caring in the final days. Test prep section provides performance skills videos for all 21 skills required in CNA test and an interactive simulation game. A link to an “official” practice test is provided.
Duration: Approximately 90 hours of self-study
Curriculum Description: Each lesson includes an explanation of what will be studied; an set of instructional slides with pre-questions, definitions and explanations of target content, lesson quiz, and immediate feedback on quiz responses (must achieve 80% to complete each step); an instructional video (primarily of an instructor at a desk, with a few still photos); and a unit test. Lessons on diseases include links to Medline Plus descriptions. A few lessons include demonstration videos.
Curriculum Pluses: Best used to augment a face-to-face bridge class (though can also be used by a student not enrolled in a class). Extensive content, covers all areas of CNA job and test requirements. Several transition skills are covered in the content. Lessons are short and focused. Format of each lesson is the same for easy navigation. Demonstration videos when provided are useful. Allows for independent study to reinforce course content. Resources teach concepts, provide practice and assess learning. Builds skills for website navigation and independent online learning. Instructors may find the resources valuable for use in class as well.
Curriculum Drawbacks: Most instructional videos are mediocre digital quality and lack adequate visuals and demonstrations to ensure student comprehension of vocabulary and concepts. Unit vocabulary pre-tests are given, but no post-tests are provided to assess vocabulary gains. No learning activities are provided to interact with the instructional slides and videos or to master the material. Activities do not explicitly build literacy skills. (Graphic organizers, note-taking instruction, flashcards, etc. could be provided by classroom instructor.)
