Course Description: This 10-12 week online class will help prepare students for the Paraeducator Certification Exam. The exam is needed for those who do not have a two or four-year degree and would like to work in a school setting with Kindergarten to 12th grade students. The certification exam is an online multiple choice exam covering Reading, Writing and Math skills, including how to apply those skills in a classroom or school setting.
The course covers topics on learning styles; communication with staff, parents and students; parent and student rights within the school setting; and gaining a better understanding of racial equity in the classroom. Students will study techniques to help support and encourage good behavior in school. Additionally, there is an opportunity to job shadow a current Educational Assistant or Teacher Assistant with St. Paul Public Schools. Students will be able to see what the job is like and how EA or TA interacts with students, school staff or parents.
