Course Description: This class prepares learners for employment as paraeducators and other educational support roles while strengthening the academic, workplace, and interpersonal skills needed for success in educational settings. Through instruction in child development, classroom support, behavior management, communication, professionalism, confidentiality, and working with diverse learners, students gain an understanding of the paraeducator role and responsibilities. The course incorporates reading, writing, math, digital literacy, career readiness, workplace scenarios, discussions, and hands-on activities that help learners build both foundational academic skills and practical skills for employment, postsecondary education, and advancement into related fields such as Early Childhood Education, Teacher Education, Special Education, and Human Services.
Duration: 12 weeks, 2.5 hrs/2 times per week in addition to five hours of TVM=120
Curriculum Materials/Description: Included materials consist of a course syllabus, scope and sequence for the instructors, a complete 12-week curriculum, and a Paraeducator Internship Manual. The curriculum is designed to provide instructors with the resources necessary to deliver the course and support student learning and career exploration.
Programs may choose to supplement the curriculum with locally developed Teacher Verification Model (TVM) lessons, as appropriate.
