BC Reads: Adult Literacy Fundamental Readers
Find readers and accompanying course packets written specifically for adults. The six levels of readers range from low beginner to the equivalent of grade 9 in the K-12 system. Use the readers and course packets online, or download them as PDFs.
Beyond Citizenship: True Stories for the Civics Class
These true stories allow students to benefit from other students’ experiences by using the approach of using real life situations as material in the classroom. Each story is accompanied by pre-reading questions, new vocabulary, and post-reading activities to assist students in applying the situation in the story to their own life experiences.

JobScout is a free online learning platform designed to help users learn basic internet skills that they need to find a job. The website is designed for native English speakers, but with support, is appropriate for high intermediate and advanced English language learners.
Guided Reading Prompts and Questions to Improve Comprehension
This blog post from Scholastic.com contains excellent teacher practices and materials that can be adapted for improving reading comprehension at any level. The post includes printable PDFs of a teacher Reading Prompt Booklet, "reading prompt" bookmarks for learners, and guided reading question cards for small-group or independent work. The reading prompts are written for a third grade reading level, which can easily be used with intermediate and advanced adult ESL learners.
Adult ESL Pronunciation Activities Videos

Video #8: Utilizing Learners’ Linguistic Toolboxes
This video deepens the conversation of the previous video “Intro to Translanguaging.” You can watch this one as a stand alone because we provide a brief review of the meaning of “translanguaging;” however, if you are looking for a deeper introduction, be sure to check out the previous video, #7. If you’re looking for practical translanguaging activities you can try, this is the video for you! We will take a look at vocabulary, writing and reading activities, plus discuss some additional things to consider during implementation.
Video #7: Intro to Translanguaging
A term circling a lot of language education spaces right now is “translanguaging”, but many of us aren’t really sure what this means. In this video, we will discuss its meaning of utilizing all of learners’ language skills to enhance the learning of a new target language. This includes GED and Career Pathways learners who speak English as their primary language, but they may speak a dialect that isn’t seen as “standard academic English.” All of these language skills are valuable. There are several reflection questions included because a key part of our work as educators is deeply reflecting on our own beliefs around languages.
